The Trailer

About the film

  • Two families, two cultures, two missing boys.

Two young boys disappear from a lakeside picnic, and when their respective families are thrown together in a search to find them, unexpected discoveries are made.

  • The concept for short film LOST arose out of a creative collaboration between Actor/Director Yuin Djiringanj man Warren Foster Snr and writer Jane Gordon on a feature-length project. With the additional input of Producer Hiromi Matsuoka, it was decided to work on two short film ideas first before returning to the longer project. LOST is Warren’s first foray into directing a narrative script and Jane’s first into directing a film project, her previous directing experience having been in theatre.

Set on a regional location on the Far South Coast of NSW, the film tells the story of two families, one indigenous and the other non-indigenous, whose two boys go missing on an adventure. This collaboration will enable both emerging writer/ directors to realise their vision on the screen, assisted by Producer Hiromi Matsuoka and Digital Creative/ DOP Andrew Robinson.

  • 14 drafts later, LOST is almost ready to be filmed, with the next step being location surveys and development workshops with he cast and crew under the guidance of dramaturg and acting coach Patrick Dickson.

  • A BIG thank you to all of our supporters of our first Australian Cutural Fund campaign! Well , it turned out to be 20 drafts later, but we got going with our workshops/rehearsals in March and completed our filming ( bar one day of pick-ups) in April 2023!

  • Sunday 26 March- blocking rehearsal on location at Wallaga Lake.As cast and crew gathered at the allocated time ready to discuss the shoot ahead and block out scenes for filming the next day, one of the Directors was missing. She was last seen collecting props, wardrobe and the hero boat ( from “just around the corner.”) with PA Charlene. What happened? Was she lost at sea? Finally, at a distance two heads appear around an island in the middle of the lake as the cast and crew looked on in disbelief( and relief.) Is that her? Why are they rowing backwards?

Roll camera, sound…and Action! The Shoot commences.

We begin! Smoking Ceremony at the Murrah Hall, March 2023

  • Our workshop day at the Murrah Hall started with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony by Co-Writer/Director Warren Foster Snr.

In my native Japan we also start shoots this way. It's a slightly different ritual but the intention is the same -to acknowledge and thank the country we will be filming upon, and to bring the cast and crew together as a team, to put aside any differences and ask for everyone's good health and safety.

Workshop day at the Murrah Hall, March 2023

  • After the ceremony dramaturg and acting coach Patrick Dickson took us through a fun, sometimes challenging day of games and exercises to bring us all together as cast and crew. In the afternoon we had our first table read together.

Preproduction starts in earnest

  • The workshop day at the Murrah Hall was the first time we had all been togeher as a team, and we lcoked in the schedule!

Preproduction matters !

  • It took a while, but it’s done ! Creating a shortlist. is a daunting task for even the most experienced director, and Warren and Jane spent quite a few days translating the words of the script into shots and camera angles.

  • Our next step is to get all the cast. together for some workshops under the guidance of experienced dramaturge and acting coach Patrick Dickson.

“The reason why we came up with this film concept is to help people’s awareness and to bring two cultures that wouldn’t normally mingle together. The film brings two families and two cultures together.

I made two films with Hiromi- Yuwinj Dhari Bulwal ,a documentary of the Yuin people and another called Bunaan. I was credited on that as a director and another called Kooringal about an anthropologist named WH Howard. I also did a music video with my son Warren Foster Jnr and my name is in the credits there.

I think it’s important to direct this film because it’s important getting our stories out and connecting with people in that way. We can tell our own stories and write them but it’s important to actually direct and make the film with our stories in it - then we can control the story that ends up being told..”
